Chinchillas are active, positive, and hilarious animals. Many breeders, to diversify the days of the pet, buy and install special toys in the cages. In addition to toys, fluffy pets need accessories such as carrying and brushing wool. Some owners also buy harnesses and leashes; however, using them involves quite a few dangers.
Types Of Toys For Chinchillas.
Toys for fluffy rodents are made of different materials, but there is one general requirement for all – safety.
Therefore, you should not buy and use toys from:
- Cardboard, foam or paper,
- Any material with a high content of gels, paints or varnishes,
- Any material containing cement or lime.
Most often, toys for animals are made of ceramics, wood, stone, metal and vegetable fibers.
Wooden toys should not contain any traces of paint and be of permitted wood species:
- Apple trees
Wooden toys can be either static – attached to the floor or walls, or loose. From the same tree most often made all kinds of swings and ladders, houses, shelves, labyrinths and trapiki.
When choosing a ceramic toy, you should carefully inspect it for the absence of sharp corners or projections. You can use flower pots, drainage pipes of suitable diameter, and other pottery.
Stone toys are designed for grinding ever-growing teeth, and therefore should not contain dangerous inclusions. Most often, stone toys are stones for grinding teeth. Sometimes they have the form of a lock, fruit or vegetable.
All kinds of ropes, hammocks, and ladders, ropes, bedding, baskets, and bowls are made from plant fibers. The primary condition is that the fabric should not be bleached or dyed.
Various running wheels present metal toys.
DIY toy for the pet.
Toys can be not only purchased. Chinchillas are pretty savvy animals and adapt a variety of objects to their games. Even a walnut shell can become a favorite fluffy pet toy. Some breeders prefer to make toys for chinchillas with their own hands.
For the most popular option you will need:
- Metal chain from the hardware store,
- Several metal key rings,
- Sprigs of any permitted tree,
Sprigs must be well washed and dried, preferably in the oven. The branches are sawn into stones and round. In each of them a hole is drilled, the diameters equal to the diameter of the chain. A chain is passed through all the twigs, and at its ends are key rings. For them it is very convenient to hang a ready-made toy on the cage walls. The number of branches and the length of the chain depends only on the desire of the breeder and the size of the cage!
But the use of soft toys is a very controversial issue. Some breeders claim that their pets play with plush toys and even sleep with them in an embrace. However, most have a negative experience: the toy is quickly torn to pieces, the filler and other parts fall into the pet’s stomach and cause poisoning of varying severity, intestinal obstruction and even death. If there is a desire – you can try to give a soft toy to your pet and look at its reaction. It is likely that the animal make friends with a toy. However, this does not mean that after some time the chinchilla’s teddy friend will not be torn to pieces.
Chinchilla Carrying Case.
When choosing a carrier should focus on what it will be used for. If for a short trip – to the doctor or to the country, it is better to choose a small box, which is easy to put in a bag and insulate if necessary. Too much carrying is better not to buy – the animal can easily get hurt. However, too close boxing should not be – the tightness will lead to stuffiness. There is no need to try to find one carrier for two or more animals: transportation is always carried out in individual boxes.
The most convenient and practical option for carrying is a plastic container.
In the cold season, it is recommended to put the carrier in a bag. You can use as any sports bag of a suitable size, and unique, for the transport of animals.
Before you put the animal in the carrier, the bottom must be covered with litter — usually, sand for bathing chinchillas, sawdust or wood granulate acts as a litter. The sand is very convenient, but it is not recommended to use it if the pet goes to the exhibition. Grains of sand caught on wool will distort the pet’s natural color. In the winter months, the use of sand is also controversial for long-term transportation: sand does not store heat well.
In winter, it is recommended to warm the carrier with hay, as well as put a little favorite treat – this will help to cope with stress.
Clothes, leashes and harness for chinchillas.
Accessories for chinchillas presented today in stores are so diverse that they confuse the factories. The most controversial of the goods is a leash with a harness. Walking chinchillas on the street is absolutely impossible.
And there are several reasons for this:
- Chinchilla fur is easily damaged by any harness and collar,
- Chinchillas do not walk – they move by jumping. The collar can break the spine, the harness – the ribs,
- There are quite a lot of dangerous bacteria, germs, fungi,
- An abrupt change of scenery, new smells and sounds, a bright light – all this will lead to extreme stress and can provoke a heart attack.
- A chinchilla is usually walked at home, and for home walks a harness with a leash is not needed.
- Similarly, no leads and harness for exhibitions are needed – the animal from the carrier is placed in the exhibition box.
Products for chinchillas and include a variety of clothes: vests, jackets, shorts, overalls, and dresses. There is no need to talk about the actual use of such accessories: the animal in clothes in a cage is not left – in a few minutes the pet will gnaw everything up to what it can reach and still get poisoned with colored fabric. At exhibitions also animals do not need additional decorations. The downside is the fact that the chinchilla is a freedom-loving animal, and it can be challenging to persuade the animal to wear tight clothing.
It is worth remembering that the fur of the animal is quite dense and warm, which means that you can get a heat stroke from using clothes, especially during the summer months.
But what is needed is an excellent brush to care for the animal’s thick fur. To comb gradually. Usually, chinchilla likes this procedure, and they do not express discontent. Regular brushing will help to avoid many problems with the skin and fur: dermatitis, fungal diseases, skin parasite infections. Also, with the help of a comb before the exhibition, you can give your pet a neater look.
