Chinchilla – animal from the order of rodents, the genus chinchillas. Homeland – South America. At home, they keep the long-tailed chinchilla. She is bred for the sake of beautiful fur on special farms. Over the years, the animal has become increasingly popular – more and more it is turned on as a pet. What caused such popularity? First, it is an adorable animal. Secondly, it is small. Chinchilla also lives quite a long time – up to 20 years. Finally, it is an elegant animal, and if the owner has patience, the animal can become completely tame.
Chinchillas have a grayish-blue (ashy) color. Their belly is white. The fur is thick and very soft. The animal has expressive eyes, small front and long hind legs, long tail.
Actually, in appearance chinchilla and evaluate when buying. The wool of the animal should be smooth, not tangled. Eyes – alive, brilliant. Breathing – calm, without whistles and wheezing. Evaluate the weight of the animal – the animal should not be too skinny, especially with areas of the body that are bare of wool, and you should not take too fat, slow-moving chinchillas.
When examining a chinchilla, stroke it against the fur – so you will understand if it has irritations and skin lesions, dried crusts of pus, as well as flea ticks. Pay attention to the eyes and nose of the animal – there should be no discharge from them. Otherwise, there is a risk of infection.
For the maintenance of chinchilla, you must acquire a cage or aviary. If you purchase one animal, a cage measuring 27 x 19 inch and 19 inch high will fit. If there are several chinchillas, the cage should be more spacious – less than 35 x 27 inch and 19 in tall.
It would be nice to have a pallet in the cage (iron or aluminum sheet) where the litter should be poured (use fine chips, sawdust). By the way, chinchilla is a clean animal, almost odourless, and therefore the offspring will have to be changed infrequently – about once a week.
In the cage, it is desirable to install wooden shelves (width – 5-6 inch), where the animals will rest. Do not interfere with the ladders, as well as wooden tunnels. Set in a cage a house for recreation, as well as raising offspring (11 inch in length, 6 inch in depth, height – 6 inch). It will also need to change the litter.
Do not forget that the chinchilla is a rodent. Therefore it is necessary to provide it with a pebble for grinding teeth. Wooden toys are also suitable for this purpose. To make the animal feel good, ventilate the room, but protect the animal from drafts. It is also undesirable that a chinchilla stays long in the sun.
You should not try to establish a friendship with your pet from the very first days of acquiring an animal. Give the animal a few days to get used to the new place.
Talk gently with the chinchilla, constantly repeating her name. A couple of times a day “bribe” the animal with raisins (not more than half). In this case, do not frighten the animal with sharp movements – move smoothly, slowly.
Over time, the chinchilla will take the raisins right out of your hand. Later, she will have an interest in you. When she wants to explore your side, you can gently tickle her behind the ears or under the chin.
After some time, the animal will not be afraid to get to your shoulder or face. Here the main thing is not to frighten the pet.
When you decide to release a chinchilla, close all the places where the animal can hide. Then carefully open the cage. You can lure an animal again raisins. Also, you can return it. As an option – use the bathing with sand. It’s better not to catch with your hands – this will put an end to your friendship for a long time.
If the chinchilla cannot be returned to the cage, take it at the base of the tail, substituting the other hand as a support, and carefully transfer it to the cage.
When the animal realizes that you are safe for him, it will come to you, climb on you, play and allow you to iron.
