Where should live chinchilla?
Even though you plan to tame the animal in the future and make friends with it, you should be aware that your chinchilla will be calmer and safer, especially if other pets live in your home if she has her home-cell. Therefore, to the question of where the chinchilla should live, we answer unequivocally – it must live in a cage specially equipped for it. Neither in the box (this is not a rabbit), nor in a large glass jar, or a plastic basin or a shoe box.
If you take responsibility for acquiring this animal – you must be prepared for what you have to buy a cage for a chinchilla.
And, here’s what types of cells are, which are better, and which ones have several significant drawbacks – we will tell you in our next paragraph of the article …
Types of cages for chinchillas.
From the moment a chinchilla began to live next to a man, the latter began to think about, and in which cage chinchilla would be more convenient and better to spend the days of his life. The result of such reflections were different variants of cells for these creatures. And, in more detail about each of these options, about their advantages and disadvantages, we will tell you now.
Metal cage for chinchilla.
But do not rush to think that you so quickly found the perfect cage for your pet. These cells are very … noisy, and when the animal runs through its floors “houses”- it will make a lot of noise. It is unlikely that it will please you if the cell is in the room where you relax or work. Another drawback, since the bottom of the cage, is made in the form of a dense metal mesh, the garbage from the cage, the leftover food will periodically appear on the floor in your room.
Another drawback, which, however, can be easily corrected, is because the shelves in such cells are most often made of either plastic or metal – so that your chinchilla is comfortable – be sure to replace them with wooden ones.
Cage showcase for chinchilla.
If you decide to start a couple of animals at once, and in the future, you plan to breed them, you will certainly consider the option of a more spacious cage – the so-called showcase. Such cells showcases look more presentable than metal cells and can be made of various materials. And this is where the fun begins.
Wooden display cases Chinchillas like it very much – it’s closer to natural material, it’s pleasant to live in such a wooden house, and if necessary, you can even sharpen your teeth against the walls of such a showcase cell. They do not cost much, but … the peculiarity of wood as a material for a cage is that wood absorbs odors and moisture, therefore, over time, your wooden showcase cell will start to smell specifical, and the floor and its walls may swell from moisture. All your attempts to remove the smell by disinfecting the habitat of a rodent can end very badly. The tree can absorb disinfectants, and when the chinchilla starts to nibble it, it can poison itself. As an option, you can, of course, offer a combined wooden version, where the floor is made of laminate, fiberboard or other material, which is not so vulnerable to moisture, but it’s up to you to decide whether this option is the best.
Another version of the showcase – from the profile. Many breeders of chinchillas give preference to him. So much more convenient, safer, and more beautiful. It is easy to take away such show-window from a profile; they long serve and do not lose the attractive appearance. But, if you buy a ready-made showcase – be sure to ensure that the grid is securely fixed, partitions and glass are not “walking”. It will depend on this whether your chinchillas will run away and whether they will be disabled during such an attempt to escape. As for the cost of such windows from a profile, they are, of course, more expensive than wooden windows.
Homemade cell variant.
Among those people who give birth to chinchillas are many do-it-yourselfers. Therefore, it is sometimes possible to come across quite unusual variants of cells for chinchillas. For example, with variants of shop-windows “alterations”. For the manufacture of such a cell, the master takes cabinets for books or for the office, removes shelves from it, removes doors, inserts glass, cuts holes in the side walls, treats the edges of all surfaces for safety, inserts nets, and fastens wooden shelves and exclusive accommodation for chinchilla ready to receive its owner.
If you have time, materials and desire – you can make a house for a chinchilla with your own hands, the cost price of such a cell is low, it can be easily removed, it doesn’t fit in well with the interior and takes your self-esteem every time you look at it. The difficulty with this option is that you are such a master and find the right material for such a self-made cell.
Basic requirements for the chinchilla cage.
Whatever type of cage you choose for the animal, you should make sure that it is suitable for your pet. I.e.,
The cage or window must be cozy, bright, warm, dry, and well ventilated.
The minimum cell size is the following dimensions: 50 centimeters long by 50 centimeters wide by 70 centimeters high. It is the “subsistence” minimum. Ideally, there should be more space for one chinchilla, since these animals are unusually active, and in tight spaces, they can start to hurt. If you get several animals, then these cell sizes should be multiplied by the number of chinchillas living together, and add space for active games and active pastime of your pets.
For security reasons, the distance between the rods or grid cells in a cell or a shop window should not be more than 2 centimeters. If such a range is less – small chinchillas will be able to get out and escape.
For your convenience, and cleanliness in the cages, it is better to replace the floor with a retractable metal pan, on which you will pour fine chips and sawdust as soft bedding for the chinchilla. Do not forget to change this litter at least one time per week, and wash the pallet itself.
Optional accessories for chinchilla cage.
If you think that it is enough to get a cage for a chinchilla, to lay bedding in it, to run the animal and he will be happy with his housewife – you are mistaken. For the life of your little pet to be comfortable, safe, comfortable, and happy, you should take care of purchasing additional accessories for the chinchilla cage.
House for the chinchilla.
If you have a sufficiently spacious cage or shop window, you should install a small animal house in it. The size of the house may be slightly larger than the size of the animal itself, because the chinchilla will hide in it when it wants it, or it will rest there.
If the cell size does not allow you to put such a house, or your chinchilla refuses such artificial shelter this happens often enough, make sure that there are special shelves or niches in the cage where the animal could hide and where could be alone. The width of such a shelf or niche should be at least 15 centimeters, since chinchillas often rest in such secluded places, stretching to their full height. However, do not try to place such shelves at high altitude – the animal may fall and be crippled.
The feeder can be made of plastic, and it should be quite deep and comfortable for the chinchilla itself. Do not forget to wash it regularly. And, so that the chinchilla does not turn it over during its active games, it is better to attach it to the cage door or the front wall.
Your pet necessarily needs fresh and clean water. Pour it into the drinker, which you can attach to the wall or the cage door. Putting the drinker on the floor – we do not recommend it. Chinchilla will easily turn it over, sawdust or garbage can get into the water. Well, in the worst case – your pet will think that this is his new toilet. As for the drinker option – that is, nipple or ball – here you have to choose with your pet. The main thing is that the drinker does not leak.
Mineral or salt stone.
Such a stone is needed by your pet so that it can grind its teeth. For the stone not to be lost, but to be in a prominent place and the chinchilla knew what to do with it – attach it to the cell wall.
Chinchillas are neat and tidy creatures. Therefore, you can safely put them in a cage tray-toilet.
If your pet’s cage is spacious enough, and you are a real caring owner, you should take care to please your chinchilla with toys, as these animals are very active and playful. Take care of buying a running wheel (don’t buy metal – it is extremely traumatic, it’s better to give preference to plastic, which is attached to the cage wall), small plastic tunnels (their chinchillas adore), wooden toys, a couple of branches, or even birch stump.
Since chinchillas take not quite water procedures and wash in the sand – in the cage, there should be a small container with such sand. It is also better to strengthen it so that the chinchilla cannot turn it over.
Where to put the cage?
Of course, the place where the cage will stand with your pet will depend on how large the cage will be, and how large your area is in the room. However, in any case, remember the most important rules.
A cage with a chinchilla should not be in a draft, stand on the floor, be in direct sunlight, stand near an electric or gas appliances.
Safety and comfort of your pet further depend on the observance of these basic conditions.
Cleaning the cage.
For your pet to be healthy, and nothing in your house (in particular, a specific smell) reminds you that you are a breeder of chinchillas – the cage should be regularly cleaned and disinfected, change the litter, wash the toilet and all accessories of your pet. Do not be lazy to do it.
At the same time, cosmetic cleaning is carried out daily and includes cleaning of food debris and debris, replacement of bedding, washing of water bowls, and feeders. General cleaning is carried out at least once a week or even more often, and includes disinfection of all surfaces, followed by washing. After that, dry and clean the cage should be dried for several hours, and only after that, you can fill up fresh sawdust and replant the animal in the cage. By the way
while the cage is being cleaned, the chinchilla should be in a temporary enclosure.
