Dwarf rabbits are cute and beautiful animals. Adults and children love these charming creatures with small expressive eyes, funny ears, and unusual habits. Breed of dwarf rabbits.
These pets are brought up not for the sake of wool or meat, but solely for the sake of care and attention from the person, good mood and joy. You should know that the dwarf breed and – this is not the same thing. The main difference is that rabbits can be of different sizes, and little ones can be miniature animals, who remain so all their lives. In the world there are a large number of breeds of dwarf rabbits, differing from each other not only in appearance but also in their character and habits. It is worth considering the most popular and common ones.
Rabbit of breed “Rex”, or royal dwarfish rabbit.
“Rex” appeared as a result of breeding in France in 1919. Unusual animals were then called “Castor Rex”, which means “king of beavers”. Their brown fur with a reddish tinge, it is very similar to beaver fur, and in quality and beauty of fur skin, rabbits resemble chinchillas. Since in rabbits of this breed, the guard hairs and the undercoat are about the same length, the fur cover looks like plush or velvet and can rightfully be considered royal.
The pet’s body weight is about 1.5 kg, which is slightly more than the average weight of dwarf rabbits. A light body with a proud posture, a slightly pointed head with standing ears about 6 cm long gives the animal a very elegant look. An important feature of the royal rabbits – little, somewhat curved mustache. Animals have large dark eyes. The color of their wool is very diverse. There are even spotted individuals. The animals of this breed are real phlegmatic, as they have calm character, very affectionate and friendly.
Rabbit dwarf “Lop-eared Ram”.
Animals of this breed are the most popular due to their appearance, making them look like cute soft toys. Little rams are good-natured and completely non-aggressive; they like attention very much and gladly give themselves to be stroked. It is believed that these pets have a certain intelligence and able to respond to their name. They are very attached to their master, everywhere following him with a kind of “tail”.
Adults lop-eared sheep weigh from one and a half to three kilograms, have a stocky body with a wide chest, short neck and strong legs. The head is rather large, the muzzle with rounded cheeks is well developed, the eyes are large with a characteristic bulge between them. The ears, rounded at the tips, are covered with wool, their average length is about 25 cm. Surprisingly, the rabbits of this breed have erect ears, which begin to sag gradually approximately two weeks after birth. Due to the particular shape of the ears, the hearing of these pets is slightly worse than that of other representatives of dwarf breeds.
Pygmy rabbit “Hermelin”.
The animals of this breed appeared in Western Europe in the early twentieth century as a result of the crossing of albino rabbits and small Dutch. The color of the fur coat of the Hermelin can be called truly snow-white. In the old days, animals were raised only for the sake of their beautiful skins, which were compared with ermine fur, so the breed of such rabbits received another name – “ermine“. Just because of the dense fur, these short-haired rabbits do not tolerate heat well.
Germelins look very cute and make an impression living soft toys. The average weight of an adult animal is 1.5 kg. Compared with the body, their head is rather large, the ears are short, no longer than 6 cm, the nose is small and looks like a button, the eyes can be blue or red.
Angora Dwarf Rabbit.
These are rabbits with the most unusual, one might say, exotic looks of all dwarf species. The animals have a very long and thick coat, which has not only the trunk, but also ears, muzzle. The length of hairs reaches 20 cm. Angora rabbits are so fluffy that they resemble dandelions or large snowflakes. In order to avoid the formation of tangles, their wool should always be kept clean, combed at least twice a week, and during the molt every other day. A variation of the Angora breed are rabbits with shorter hair, whose length is not more than 6 cm. It is certainly much easier to care for it.
Adult Angora dwarfs have a low weight of 1.5 kg maximum. Females weighing less than 900 grams are not allowed to breed. Pets of this breed have complex nature and contradictory temperament, which must be taken into account when purchasing.
Color Dwarf Rabbit.
This breed of dwarfs appeared in the early twentieth century in the Netherlands as a result of the crossing of white red-eyed mini-rabbits with wild ones. By the middle of the century, these short-haired dwarf rabbits purchased various colors fur cover, which currently has more than fifty.
The most common among them are:
- Russian, Japanese, Thuringian;
- chocolate and siamese;
- gray, blue and silver;
- squirrel and chinchilla;
- luxury, ren, havana.
Colored rabbits are the smallest of all dwarfs. An adult individual weighs only about a kilogram or a little more. The animal has a strong body with a large head, erect ears no more than 5.5 cm long, a short neck and legs. Colored rabbits are different unpredictable character, which is fully manifested during puberty of the animal. At the age of about one and a half years, pets become more friendly and generally behave calmly. They adore when they scrape between the ears, massage the cheeks.
