The decision to purchase a rabbit as a pet should be severe because these are gentle and even capricious animals that will need to provide a particular microclimate. Poor living conditions cause diseases and nervous disorders of these rodents.
For a rabbit, you can create a whole city inside the cage
To provide pets with comfort, the following nuances of their content should be considered:
- Other pets (cats, dogs) can be harmful to rabbits, so they should not be kept in the same room. Also, it is not recommended to admit small children to small rodents.
- Rabbits can safely tolerate low temperatures but suffer in the heat. Also, they can get sick from excessive humidity, temperature changes and drafts.
- The cage with pets should not be placed near the heater, and the direct rays of the sun should not fall into the pets’ home.
It is better to allocate a separate room for rabbits.
In the intense heat of the rabbit is recommended to bathe
Pets with long hair require careful maintenance.
Rabbit feeding rules
rabbits are recommended to be vaccinated, like other pets
Note! The most “weak” place of rodents are the ears and withers, so they should not be lifted behind the ears. It is necessary to take a rabbit carefully, supporting it under one belly with one hand. Read more about breeding rabbits in our special article.
Each owner wants to provide their pet with the most comfortable housing, so before starting work on making a rabbit house, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the following rules.
So, even a dwarf breed pet needs a lot of space (at least four times more than the rabbit itself). The minimum length of the cage is 40 inch, and the width is 23 inch. It should be borne in mind that all inventory (feeders, drinkers, a tray, toys) should be placed there.
It is better to choose natural materials for a dwelling because craws react negatively to any toxic substances.
Wood is a durable, environmentally friendly material.
The most hygienic is considered to be a mesh floor, but it is suitable for pets of not all breeds – some little rodents may suffer from this paws. Therefore, the storey in a cage or house is covered with a natural coating with a rigid structure (it must be resistant to moisture). Also, you will need to bend any sharp metal corners and ends from the wire.
Note! Rabbits are mobile animals that can feel bad in a limited space, so they are recommended to be periodically let out for a walk around the apartment. Only the door of the dwelling should always be kept open so that the pet has access to the tray, feeding trough and drinking bowl.
We will consider options for creating a comfortable home for rodents from different materials – this will significantly save the budget.
First of all, it is necessary to make a drawing indicating the size of the structure, the location of the door, and other elements. If you wish, you can develop your scheme or take the finished version as a basis.
An exemplary drawing of a rabbit cage
A two-tier dwelling is the best option for a rabbit where he will have enough free space to move. The size of the structure from the inside will be 23 × 27 inch, considering that according to the recommendations of specialists, less than one square meter is required for each rabbit.
The main advantage of the cell is that it is easy to transfer it to any convenient place. It can even carry a pet.
In a bunk cage, a pet of a dwarf breed will feel good.
Materials and tools
For the construction of the cell, we will need the following materials:
It is not necessary to purchase new materials for such purposes because you can use parts from old furniture. Also, you will need to prepare some fixtures:
- electric drill;
- stapler (furniture);
- measuring tape.
Note! It is recommended to prepare in advance all the holes for the fasteners because the boards are fragile and may break during assembly.
Step 1: first you need to make the base of the cell. In this case, we need to prepare bars of 45 centimetres long, which will decrease to perform the functions of support. Also, you will need to cut a rectangle measuring 60 × 70 centimetres from a plywood sheet.
Now you need to make holes in the bars, and then fix them to the plywood using self-tapping screws.
Step 2: now should be made a wall-partition, which will serve as the basis of the upper tier. To do this, it is necessary to cut the same rectangle from the plywood sheet as in the previous case. Only now from the lower left side should make an additional opening through which the pet can get to the top floor.
The size of the hatch should correspond to the size of the grown rabbit
Step 3: Now you need to attach a plywood sheet (where there is an opening) to the racks.
Screws are also used as fasteners.
Step 4: Now you need to mark two other side walls (23 × 36 inch) on dense sheets of plywood. Next, they will need to cut using a saw.
It is necessary to fix the walls on the frame so that the design is flat
Step 5: Now it is necessary to make the work stands for the second tier, and the same plywood sidewall. It is required to attach all the walls and ceiling of the future dwelling to the posts. The result should be such a structure, as shown in the photo below.
Step 6: now should make a threshold. It is necessary to prevent the precipitation of food and litter out of the cage.
It should be screwed to the vertical supports on the screws.
Step 7: Now you need to start making the door. It is recommended to make it from boards, and then connect them with brackets and a furniture stapler.
If the construction is too fragile, then the frame can be strengthened with metal corners.
Step 8: for greater rigidity of the structure, a metal grid is fixed to the frame with the help of the same stapler.
Next will be to secure the door to the hinges and install the locking mechanism
Step 9: Now you should make a kind of staircase for the rabbit to the upper floor, which in this case is a ramp. To do this, you need to cut out the rectangular detail of the height of the cell from plywood. Since the ramp will be inclined, the rabbit can easily slide off. To prevent such consequences, it is necessary to sheathe it with a soft material.
You can glue on a ramp a piece of rubber mat or ice cream stick
Step 10: finally, stable legs should be fixed to the lower part of the cage.

Since wood is a natural material, it can rot due to constant dampness (the rabbit can shed water, and the animal can go to the toilet directly on the floor of the cage or house). Therefore, upon completion of production, the structure should be treated with a particular disinfectant solution – for such purposes, linseed oil is perfect, as well as chlorine solution or iodine.
This composition must be applied to the walls of the structure from the outside and inside, after which it should be placed in the sun until it is scorched.
Natural wood products are treated with antiseptic without fail.
In winter, after treatment, the cage can be placed next to the heater. Only it will have to be periodically deployed by different sides to the heat source – this will prevent cracks in the wood.
Only after 24 hours is it allowed to paint the cage. However, it is recommended to apply paint only from the outside, which is inaccessible to pets. For such purposes, suitable water-dispersion paint, but not oil. Air painted design should be no less than 3-4 days, then it will be possible to colonize animals.
Note! It is advisable to put the house after painting on the balcony, where it will air out faster.
Of course, a home for pets from a cardboard box can hardly be called durable. However, this is an excellent option if you need a temporary house. Also, some residents prefer to release the rabbit to walk around the apartment continually, and the pet uses only the cage as a bed and a toilet, so it does not necessarily spend money on an expensive construction.
It is necessary to choose a box for the size of a rabbit. If the animal is large, then you can connect two boxes
In the course of work we will need the following materials and devices:
- cardboard boxes – 2 pieces (14 inch high, and 17 inch long);
- clerical knife or scissors;
- adhesive tape;
- simple pencil.
Table number 1. Instructions for making a house for a rabbit out of the box
It is necessary to take one of the boxes, turn them over and draw a circle on the side that will serve as the entrance to the other table. In this case, it is not necessary to make a threshold, but you can draw a semicircle, and then cut it at the bottom.
The same holes should be drawn in the other sides. Without an aperture, there will be only a back part.
Note! If desired, you can issue a design with a special film with a glue base. This will give the cardboard dwelling a finished look, but this is not necessary.
As a result of such manipulations, it was possible to get a spacious house for one rabbit with two central openings and one side.
Regardless of the choice of one or another version of the house should be remembered that this is a box with openings that should be arranged inside. At the same time, it is necessary to take into account some rules.
If you are going to keep a rabbit in a cage, then it is recommended to cover most of the floor with bamboo fibre. In the corner, you need to put absorbent material, where the rabbit will go to the toilet. If desired, you can install the tray – as a rule; domestic rabbits quickly get used to it. In the case of a bunkhouse, you can put a toilet capacity under the ramp.
Also, you need to prepare the feeders and drinkers, and then carefully fix them in a cage. It is better to attach them to the side walls near the door because rabbits can turn over bowls and spill water, spill food.
Approximate option of arrangement of a house for a rodent
It is necessary to clean the rabbit cage from feces and food debris every day. Also, as pollution is required to update the layer of litter. Drinking bowls and feeders will have to be washed with boiling water once every 24 hours, and the tray filler should be changed once a week. Urine stains can be quickly removed with water and vinegar.
It is necessary to regularly change not only the litter in the cage but also the tray filler
Note! It is categorically forbidden to use chemical agents for cleaning the rodent’s cage, because they release harmful fumes to pets.
Careful cleaning of the cage should be done every seven days. It includes complete disinfection of the house. Thus, the corners of the structure will need to be sprayed with water with the addition of lemon juice, soda or a special spray that eliminates the smell of animals (the rabbit will have to be removed for a while). If there is a rug in the cage, then it should also be taken out and washed.
It is essential to understand that only in the case of self-made dwellings for pets, it will be possible to take into account every nuance, while some factory constructions have an inconvenient shape or not the same dimensions. Today we have considered the manufacture of houses of standard sizes, but if you wish, you can make a home of a larger scale, because the presence of free space has a positive effect on the health of the rabbit.
