The Japanese dwarf rabbit is used for decorative purposes and is grown, in most cases, at home. A characteristic feature of the breed is a great striped color, located with surprising symmetry: the border dividing the color of the coat passes precisely in the middle of the face and back. If the right side of the face in a rabbit is light, then the right ear will be dark and vice versa. However, this coloring is somewhat unstable and can manifest itself in various ways in further progeny.
Japanese dwarf breed
Dwarf animals of various color resemble a living toy. They become the real decoration of the home or household. Rabbits of this breed belonging to the group of short-haired, since the length of their wool do not exceed 40 mm, and the length of downy hairs is 25 mm. The mass of adults is in the range of 800-1500 gr.
Reference. Interestingly, the Japanese rabbit was not bred at all in Japan, but in France. They were first presented at the exhibition of animals in 1887. The dwarf subspecies has all the signs of a full-sized breed: the same chess color from alternating stripes, a high degree of contrasting colors.
The dominant colors in the colors of animals of the Japanese breed are yellow and black. At the same time, there can be patches of ashy color, white and red. The sharper and brighter the stripes on the animal’s hair, the more precisely it meets the accepted standards and is valued most highly.
The content of dwarf rabbit breeds is not much different from the full-size individuals. For them, their house should be equipped: a wooden cage with a slatted floor during breeding or a “feline” apartment when kept as pets. For such rocks, it is firmly not recommended to tinker with iron cages or plastic boxes, since they can injure an animal and cause inflammatory diseases. Also, the Japanese dwarf rabbit with constant content in pen will be challenging to tame.
For feeding, animals use only high-quality food.
In summer, they should eat fresh grass, and in winter, hay and vegetables.
The basis of the diet of rabbits are:
- combined feed for rabbits, which at home can be replaced with wheat, oats;
- vegetables and fruits (rabbits eat apples, carrots, cabbage, and beets well, you can also give potatoes, previously boiled in salted water);
- branch feed (thin branches of willow, aspen or spruce).
As you can see, containing the Japanese pygmy rabbit is a snap. It is essential to observe the recommendations for feeding, regularly show your pet to the veterinarian. Breeding of this breed also does not cause any particular difficulties: the average litter consists of 6-10 babies, which the female feeds herself with her milk. Taking the offspring from the rabbit is not recommended until the age of 2-2.5 months.
