If the rabbit has nothing to do in the absence of the owners, he quickly gets bored. As a result, its owner will face serious material damage – the animal starts to gnaw at everything from anguish. If the rabbit has its toys, it will make his life more intense and interesting.
The rabbit is an active animal.
It cannot sit in a cage for a long time. At his disposal should be items that you can climb into which you can bury and hide, which you can happily nibble, etc.
The entertainment provided by the rabbit will help preserve the health of your pet, as well as furniture and things in the apartment.
By giving the rabbit toys that are suitable for him according to his age and character, you will already fulfill most of the recommendations on ensuring your pet will stay safe in the apartment.
A rabbit that has something to be entertained will not nibble on lacquered furniture or wires.
If you notice that your little rabbit nibbles and swallows the material from which the toys are made, pick up others – from materials that are not harmful to gnaw, or at least not interesting.
It can be:
- paper or cardboard boxes into which you can climb and scratch and nibble without harm to yourself. Rabbits like these boxes very much, especially if you guessed to put something unusual inside;
- cardboard rolls from toilet paper;
- boxes and non-lacquered baskets of hay, magazines, newspapers, or other natural fillers that can be buried;
- special toys sold in pet stores for cats or parrots, which can be rolled, nibbled;
- all sorts of cat houses (best wicker), special tunnels for animal games;
- children’s toys (only if the rabbit does not try to eat them);
- cotton towels;
- fruit tree branches, better than apple trees (cherry, peach, apricot can not be taken because of the poisonous properties of wood)
- items that you can jump on (rabbits like to sit upstairs);
- thoroughly washed plastic bottles from food products (but not household chemicals).
All rabbits are different, and they like different toys.
Watching your pet, you can choose a toy that will appeal to him.
Toys are necessary for rabbits as well as communication. But even if you gave a young rabbit, not yet accustomed to order, many toys, this does not mean that you can leave it alone at home for eight hours, and on returning you will find the apartment in perfect order.
It is not necessary to provide complete freedom of action to the pet. Being engaged in raising a rabbit, teach it to the schedule of walks, convenient to both of you. When he grows up, it will no longer need to follow it so strictly, but do not rush things.
Pick up toys based on what activities your pet likes.
Being a burrowing animal, the rabbit will never give up the pleasure of trying to dig a hole for itself. The foreign industry produces various tunnels and artificial burrows for rabbits.
It will be too difficult to do something similar, but you can find a cylindrical box (for example, a narrow package from under a brandy bottle) – you will get a convenient tunnel. Cover one end of the tunnel with a paper or cotton towel so that the rabbit can “dig” a passage for himself.
If during a walk in the woods or the country you get a piece of a tree trunk with a rotted core, then after appropriate processing it can also turn out an original hole for the rabbit. The billet is soaked for 1.5-2 hours in hot water. The rotten places are scraped out, disinfected with potassium permanganate or light of a quartz lamp.
To prevent the rabbit from digging a hole in the most inappropriate place, provide him with a special simulator for this activity. Make it easy. In a large enough cardboard box, put the old newspapers, hay and other safe materials of this kind and make the entrance to it. If the rabbit has chosen one special place in the apartment where he likes to dig, make this place furniture, and next to it, put a box with a filler.
Many rabbits like to tinker with rags: bedspreads, towels, rugs, etc. If you notice that your rabbit loves to “tidy up” the bedspread on the sofa, put a towel on the floor. Make sure that the rabbit does not eat while playing, which can be very dangerous.
Some rabbits like the ball game. For such games, it is best to take big rubber balls. Inflatable ball or ball rabbit can gnaw. A loud sound will frighten him greatly, and the remnants of the ball may be swallowed.
So, toys are selected in accordance with the natural inclinations of the rabbit, and your pet should like it and, of course, be safe to use.
The rest depends on your ingenuity.
