Which Lubricant Is Best To Lubricate An Angle Grinder

Grease for gearbox angle grinder: period of use, the main stages of replacement. Application technology, recommended amount. Criteria and choices, self-production of lubricant.

Which Lubricant Is Best To Lubricate An Angle Grinder

In angle grinders (angle grinder), commonly referred to as angle grinders, the main load falls on the gear reducer changing the axis of rotation. Maintenance is required throughout the entire period of operation, since the mechanism needs to reduce friction between its interacting parts, timely maintenance. The use of grease for the gearbox angle grinder can not only minimize the destructive frictional effect, but also helps to cool the tool.

When you need to change the grease in an angle grinder

The timing of the next grease change depends on the loads and the intensity of use of the angle grinder. Usually it is 12 months. In everyday use, an angle grinder with frequent overheating changes the shift frequency significantly, at least up to six months.

To make sure that a new amount of grease is needed, the gearbox must be disassembled by unscrewing the screws on its cover. Inside is a pair of helical gears. Small is anchored and is used to actuate a large, located on the secondary shaft. A grinding or cutting disc is attached to this shaft.

During operation, the lubricant, when the gearbox moves, scatters along the walls of the casing, eventually drying out and forming large lumps. The material used for a long time overheats, becomes liquid and flows out of the housing. Therefore, its volume in the gearbox decreases. If there is only a thin layer of lubricant on the gears, it needs to be added.

The grease for the angle grinder must be changed if there are dried lumps on the inner walls of the gearboxes or if there is not enough of it.

How much grease is required to replace

Therefore, it is better to first put a little more material than required and make sure that the lubricant is evenly distributed after putting the gears of the gearbox in action. The generally accepted norm is the filling with a lubricant of about 40% of the volume of the gearbox.

Old grease removal step

Removing used grease is the first step in servicing the gearbox. To remove the old layer is necessary for several reasons:

  • the used lubricant is not able to perform its functions;
  • it contains small particles formed during the wear of rubbing elements;
  • the old grease will mix with the new one, because of this the assembly will not work properly, replacement will not bring any results.

Removal of waste is carried out using disposable paper towels, rags or a flap of cloth at hand. The removed gearbox parts must be thoroughly washed in solvent or gasoline, and dried before installation. Residues used for cleaning materials are also able to mix with the new grease and change its consistency, which will lead to poor performance.

Bearing lubrication step

Gearbox lubrication step

The gearbox needs to be filled with such a volume of lubricant that it completely covers the gears.

Checking the sufficiency of lubrication for the gearbox angle grinder is performed by turning on the angle grinder for a short time. If after 3–5 minutes of operation, the temperature of the assembly has increased and leakage of the lubricant is observed, part of its volume must be removed. To do this, the gearbox is disassembled again, the excess is removed with a rag or rag.

When checking, the opposite situation may occur when noise is generated when the angle grinder is turned on. This means that the grease is insufficient and must be added.

When using the angle grinder, a periodic check of the adequacy of lubrication of the gearbox elements and the quality of the existing lubricant is required.

For routine inspections, it is necessary to unscrew the bolts that tighten the cover, and visually inspect every detail. If slightly dried or completely dry areas are observed, a complete lubricant change is recommended.

Which lubricant to choose

  • the use of expensive special greases for gearboxes from well-known brands;
  • the use of universal compounds suitable for any power tool;
  • gear lubrication with lithol or solid oil;
  • use of self-made lubricant.

Application of special materials is the optimal solution. When choosing grease for the gearbox, it is recommended to give preference to compounds manufactured under the same brand as the angle grinder itself. For example, if the machine is an AEG brand, then a lubricant must also be bought with the same brand.

When using specialized products, the service life of an angle grinder is significantly increased, since the manufacturer takes into account all the features and nuances of operating its own equipment. The disadvantage of using branded materials is their high cost, which can affect the family budget.

Most craftsmen use budget angle grinders or a Chinese-made tool. For such machines, specialized lubricating compounds by the manufacturer have not been developed and are unlikely to ever appear. However, such a technique requires maintenance. What then to do?

The most unfavorable solution is the use of lithol or solidol, since both of these materials are not designed to lubricate friction units heated to high temperatures. Some owners of grinders use only these compounds, because of which their machines cannot last for the period of operation declared by the manufacturer. In an effort to profit here and now, they do not take into account future expenses for acquiring a new tool or replacing expensive parts.

Homemade Blends

To ensure the required level of adhesion, lubricant for automotive constant velocity joints is taken as the basis. In addition to excellent penetrating properties, its use for operation in the following conditions is allowed:

  • significant loads;
  • high humidity;
  • temperature fluctuations over a wide range;
  • significant heating;
  • exposure to solid pollutants.

To thin the material and obtain the consistency needed for the gearbox, MS-20 oil is recommended. The liquid is introduced into the base gradually, preferably in drops, with constant mixing of the resulting composition with a mixer.

Equally effective is the use of home-made material based on Citiam-221 with the addition of TAD-17.
